The Dermatology Service has two main lines of research:
- Inflammatory skin disorders, especially connective tissue diseases and psoriasis.
- Skin cancer, both melanoma and nonmelanoma, and particularly their characteristics in patients who have received a solid organ transplant.

Undergraduate teaching
The Germans Trias Dermatology Service teaches the Dermatology course to 5th. year UAB medical students at the Can Ruti campus.
Postgraduate teaching
The service is involved in training medical specialists, both in dermatology, with two new residents per year, and other medical specialists who also require this knowledge: family and community medicine, internal medicine, allergology, rheumathology, plastic surgery and pediatrics.

Psoriasis is one of the most prevalent skin diseases and that can most affect the quality of life of someone who suffers from it. The unit offers the most suitable treatments for each patient profile, as well as the possibility of participating in clinical trials.
This is an expert unit in ensuring skin wellness of toddlers, children and adolescents, and it services paediatric dermatoses patients.
Patients who are diagnosed with melanoma require continuous followup aimed at early detection of possible recurrence and monitoring any other pigmented skin lesions to detect new melanoma on time. This is the task of the Melanoma Unit.
Monitoring high-risk patients' pigmented lesions with digital microscopy (fotofinder makes it possible to diagnose melanoma in its earliest stages. Digital microscopy enables us to store images of the patient's naevi distribution (in a kind of a map), as well as individual dermatoscopy images of each naevus.
It is responsible for early and discreet assessment of patients with sexually transmitted diseases. This unit is made up of dermatologists who are venereology specialists.
Skin cancer is, as a whole, the most frequent type of cancer. Surgery is the most relevant therapeutic strategy against this type of tumour. Mohs surgery has recently been incorporated into our catalog of services. Mohs surgery allows a careful study of the margins of the tumor and thus minimizes the chances of relapse.
Photodynamic therapy is a new tool to treat actinic keratosis and some types of nonmelanoma cancer. It is based on applying a photosensibilising lotion and subsequent exposure to a lamp that activates the lotion to destroy cancer or pre-cancer cells.
Connective tissue diseases have many different skin symptoms that require experienced professionals for their diagnosis and treatment.
Phototherapy is applying non-ionizing radiation to treat different skin diseases. This radiation can be ultraviolet A (UVA) or ultraviolet B (UVB). It is mostly indicated for psoriasis, atopic dermatitis or vitiligo.
This unit is responsible for the study and treatment of lymphoproliferate skin processes. It works in coordination with the Pathological Anatomy and Hematology services, and it is part of the skin lymphoma network of Catalunya.
Laser treatment is indicated in vascular lesions of various types such as telangiectasis, hemangiomas and small varicose veins of any location as well as in capillary, venous and arteriovenous malformations. The treatment consists of applying a beam of concentrated light (laser) that has a special affinity for red or blue damages and, in this way, manages to destroy them causing minimal damage to the surrounding tissue.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis, with a 2.3% prevalence in the area of Catalonia and Spain, is one of the most frequent consultations with dermatology specialists. It is a chronic inflammatory disease, associated to genetics, that may appear anytime, and that is very heterogeneuos from a clinical point of view.
The most common symptoms are red, scaly plaques usually on elbows and knees, but they may develop practically anywhere, including the scalp, palms and soles of the feet or skin folds. On some patients, it may affect the nails, making them look thickened and yellowish, and the joints, making them stiff, painful and even deformed in some cases.
It is a chronic disease and there is no definite cure. But it can respond quite well to available treatments. There are several possible treatments, including topical, oral and parenteral (intravenous) administration, based on the characteristics, extension and severity of the disease.
Each treatment has its pros and cons that must be individually assessed. This is the key factor to achieving the best possible results with a disease as complex as psoriasis. Patients must be evaluated individually by professionals with the most expertise on this disease and its possible therapeutic options.
At the Germans Trias hospital, the Psoriasis Unit, made up of highly specialized medical and nursing professionals, does just that.

From a clinical point of view, melanoma appears as a pigmented lesion that tends to be asymmetric, with irregular margins and colour, larger than 6 mm in diameter, or as shape-changing or growing lesions.
Early diagnosis is crucial for melanoma. Therefore, if a lesion meets these characteristics, you must see your primary care doctor soon.
